Do angels exist today? I have heard stories to make me wonder, but I’ve never seen any. What really convinced me of their existence was an experience I had as a new Christian.
I had gone to my friend’s farm to go ride her horses…bareback. I was not experienced with horses, but I said, “Ok, let’s go.”
It was a lovely afternoon riding along the river. We were gone for a few hours before deciding to turn back. And I had actually done just fine.
But when we came close to the long driveway that led to her home, my horse got excited to be back and started running. I was pulling back on the reigns as hard as I could while yelling “Whoa!” The horse would have none of it. He wanted to be home.
So he galloped full throttle down the driveway. Just before the house and barn, where there was a light stand grounded in concrete, I yelled, “Jesus, save me!”
The horse stopped as though putting on the brakes full-stop – right at the light stand, and I went flying over his head. Before I knew what was happening, I found myself standing beside the house as though nothing had happened, reigns held tightly in my hand. I stood there in shock, wondering what had just happened.
Psalm 91:11-12 says, “For He will order His angels to protect you whoever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.” (New Living Translation)
When my heart came back to its normal rate, I knew instinctively that an angel had prevented me from getting thrown and killed on the concrete below. At that moment, I was very grateful for God’s protection!
